What they discovered exceeded all expectations: the Hoxne Treasure, an impressive collection of more than 14,000 gold and silver coins, jewels and valuables, hidden since the end of the Roman Empire.
The find, valued at several million pounds, is one of the largest in the history of metal detecting and has been donated to the British Museum.
