Did you know? 💡The double copper tournament
Share
The double tournois de cuivre is a small French coin minted during the reign of Henry III from 1577. 🔄
This copper coin, with an official weight of 3.138 g and a value of 2 deniers tournois, was used mainly for everyday transactions, when gold and silver coins were too precious to be handled frequently.
On one side, there was a portrait of the king accompanied by the title and, most of the time, the year and the letter designating the production workshop, while the other side displayed three fleurs-de-lys with the legend “Double tournois”.
The double tournois marked French monetary history for several decades, before disappearing under the reign of Louis XIV.
