The Little Story: The Battle of Karansebes (1788) 🏰⚔️

History is full of epic battles and great clashes... but the Battle of Karansebes in 1788 is one of a kind! Imagine: an army fighting... against itself. 😮
During the war against the Ottoman Empire, the Austrian army was camped near the town of Karansebes, in present-day Romania. One evening, a group of Austrian horsemen went in search of enemies but came across schnapps sellers. The alcohol flowed freely, tempers flared, and when the Austrian infantry arrived to join the party, a fight broke out over the drink. 🍶

The exchanges quickly became violent, and in the confusion, a soldier shouted " The Turks are coming! " Panicked, the horsemen and infantrymen fired at each other, thinking they were facing the enemy. The Austrian army split up and fought itself in total chaos, believing it was fighting a surprise attack.
The result: several hundred dead... but no Ottoman soldiers in sight! When the Ottoman army arrived two days later, it found the battlefield already deserted, the Austrian army having retreated after its own debacle. 😅
